JacqNoise: Modul@rnice x MENT: Synths & Synthesis

A back to basics workshop about synth building and modular synthesis!

07 – 08 June 2022 | 16.00 – 20.00 @ osmo/za, Ljubljana

For the first Modul@rnice workshop of the new season, we are going back to basics! Join a two-day workshop with sound artist JacqNoise at MENT festival where you can learn to solder a synth and refresh your knowledge on modular synthesis.

DAY 1: Soldering a synth
Do you have a thing for weird electronic sounds? Have you been collecting exotic gadgets and DIY instruments over the years? Or do you just want to learn how to solder? Then this workshop might be something for you – build one of the 3 different stand-alone analogue or digital noise kits by Amsterdam based synthesiser producer Error Instruments.

The kits available for soldering:
BlindNoise responds to your body fluid, by using this touch interface you will create organic sounds.
DataSynth, this synth has a range of all kinds of noisy sounds. With the X and Y parameters, pitch control and disorder, the sounds are out of control, wild and disruptive.
ErrorZapper is a device for listening to electronic magnetic fields. You will be surprised how many inaudible sounds a microwave oven or the power supply of your laptop produces.

DAY 2: Synthesises of synthesisers
This part will be interesting for those who are curious to experiment with electronics and if you would like a better understanding of how to make sudden soundscapes. We will be talking about the synthesis of synthesisers, how to create your own hardware set up and what other alternatives are available. We will work in small groups to create patches with the Eurorack synthesisers available at the workshop. Be ready for a deep dive into the hardware behind sounds!

The workshop will cover:
1. What are synthesisers?
2. How and where to start with modular synthesisers? Hardware vs software & the infinity of DIY.
3. Making a patch with the Eurorack system.

Mentor

JacqNoise is a sound artist specializing in the use of live modular synthesis. In her artistic expression, she seeks ways to blend different rhythms with each other, with a special focus on natural rhythmic sounds. She deconstructs sounds to understand the idea of symphony and the themes reflected in it. She collaborates with a variety of musicians and dancers and is an education ambassador to Erica Synths, a manufacturer of modular synthesizers. Recently, she has delved into hardware interfaces that support algorithms and are based on chaos. She has collaborated with many festivals, such as Post-Loop Bangkok, Garage, MEFF Italy and the Berlin Superbooth fair.

How to apply

You do not need to have any prior knowledge or skills to attend the workshop, just a desire to learn and mess around with electronics – newbies are welcome! The number of participants is limited; please apply at rea@projekt-atol.si and specifically state which kits you would like to build.
The price for the kit is 60€ – all participants will receive an email regarding the payment process. The workshop will be held in English.
