Trees is an experiment aiming to extend human perceptual faculties. The project’s author Nataša Muševič showcases the electrical and acoustic frequencies inherent to trees.
The sonic essence of a tree was captured by recording the frequency response of its acoustic vibrations. When improving sound, sound engineers initially measure the frequency response of a room, which serves as a basis for the said sound correction. The use of such techniques enables them to obtain resonant frequencies, which reflect the specific form of the measured space. As does an empty room, all three-dimensional objects resonate, albeit we rarely contemplate it, since we are used to perceive sound as a wave motion spreading through air. The author has thus recorded the resonant frequencies of the selected tree by documenting its frequency response
As well as an insight into the intrinsic sonic qualities of a growing tree, the project offers a glimpse into its electrical properties, which are not discernible to the human senses. Trees generate weak electrical pulses; the author has amplified, recorded and included them into her sound installation, and therefore materialized the otherwise imperceptible.
Using the experimental methodology of a sound engineer Nataša Muševič offers an original and wider understanding of the natural world and encourages reflection on the limitations of human awareness.

Nataša Muševič – Dot is an electronic music producer, composer, singer, performer and multimedia artist. In 2008, she completed her BA Honors of Recording Arts at the School of Audio Engineering in London. She is the co-founder of the independent record label Imminent Recordings, and the founder of her own record label, Read Write Music. In recent years, her work has become increasingly inclined to research artistic practices, as a co-creator of multimedia projects she has participated in the projects Magnetic Matrix (M. Batista and B. Šaletič), Sonic Sculptures (Dr. S. Lumbar, M. Batista, B. Chad) and Sonosthesia 3.1 (Octex).
